Osteoarthritis or Degenerative joint disease, as it is also known is one of the most common skeletal conditions seen within dogs it is also the most common form of arthritis that they suffer from. It is a chronic progressive disease which usually affects older animals causing decreased mobility and subsequent pain due to the inflammation and deterioration of the soft tissue, cartilage and bone. As the disease progresses the articular cartilage is worn away completely causing friction to occur between the bones, the tissues around the area may also become thickened and the spurs may appear on the bones further decreasing mobility.

Estimates are that 1 in 5 dogs will suffer from Osteoarthritis in some form, with factors such as body condition, breed, exercise, and physical make up affecting that likelihood.

Whilst Osteoarthritis is generally the result of old age it can also be linked to repeated trauma or an old injury, metabolic diseases such as Cushing’s disease and diabetes have links with the deterioration of cartilage. Animals with hip or elbow dysplasia are at increased risk of osteoarthritis due to deterioration associated with these conditions as are overweight animals whose joints are under strain
